Jacqueline Kennedy, former First Lady of the United States, played a key role in helping to save Grand Central Terminal, one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, from demolition.
In the mid-1960s, plans were being developed to demolish Grand Central Terminal and replace it with a new skyscraper. However, Jacqueline Kennedy, who was passionate about preserving historic structures, rallied to save the terminal, which had been designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967.
