It’s no secret that we’ve been in Kingston for over a decade. It’s a city we know well, and it will always have a particular place in our hearts.
So, whether you’re looking for summer activities in Kingston in August or winter activities in January, we’ve got you covered!
5 Gorgeous Beaches in Kingston:
1. Trolley Tour
Taking the Historic Trolley Tour is one of the most popular sightseeing excursions in Kingston! This “hop-on, hop-off” trip takes you all over the city to the sites that any visitor would want to see. You may even get off, tour an attraction (such as Bellevue House), and then take another tram – they run during the summer!
The trolleys have live commentary from the driver and/or an audio guide, making them an excellent way to learn about the city’s history – and then some! Eric has done it several times and enjoyed the tour. It’s also a terrific way to get to Fort Henry – but we’ll get to that later.
2. Island Boat Cruise
The 1000 Island Boat Cruise is another popular excursion that departs from near the Visitor Centre. There are many boat cruises available, some of which last only a few hours while others last all day. Some involve sunset dinner cruises on various boats. You can select one and prepare based on cost and timelines. We took the 3-hour cruise to the Thousand Islands and enjoyed our half-day on the ocean! Eric has also gone on a sunset cruise with pals, which was well worth it.
3. Downtown Princess Street
Princess Street is the place to go if you want to go shopping. Princess Roadway is a long roadway that runs all the way through downtown to the waterfront. Downtown Princess Street is also located on a hill that slopes down to the water! Princess is fantastic since there are so many shops on the street. Many of them are local companies that sell everything from food to artisan crafts, apparel, and more! Summer in Kingston would not be complete without a drink on an outside terrace. There are plenty fantastic local taverns and pubs to visit. Many of these are covered in our section about Kingston bars and pubs.
4. Historic Fort Henry
Want to learn about Canada’s military history at one of the most significant sites? Then Fort Henry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an absolute must-see whilst in Kingston! Fort Henry is part of the “Kingston Fortifications National Historic Site,” which is a larger historical site. This property comprises the historic defenses around Kingston Harbour as well as the Rideau Canal’s entry.
5. Springer Market Square
The dome of the old city hall dominates the riverfront across from the Visitor Centre. It’s a lovely structure, and you may take a self-guided tour within. Springer Market area is a big open-air area located outside and around the back, away from the river. This location is a hub for activities throughout the year.

During the warmer months, there are additionally farmers/flea marketplaces and “films in the plaza.” The market schedule can be seen here. In the winter, the square is transformed into an ice-skating rink, where you may go ice skating!
