On Monday, Nintendo announced on X (previously Twitter) that Charles Martinet, who originated the voice for Super Mario, will no longer be recording the character’s voice.
After 30 years as the voice of Nintendo’s renowned mustachioed Mario figure, the man whose voice made the character famous is preparing to leave Mushroom Kingdom.
Nintendo has announced that Charles Martinet, the character’s original voice actor since the 1990s, will no longer record his role as the Italian plumber. The gaming firm announced Martinet’s new role as “Mario Ambassador” to fans throughout the world in a post on X (previously Twitter) on Monday.
Nintendo stated on X that “it has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years.” As the saying goes, “We want to thank and celebrate him.”
The article also hinted at a forthcoming video message from Mario series creator and Nintendo CEO Shigeru Miyamoto. The announcement did not elaborate on the reason for Martinet’s departure or name his replacement as Mario’s voice actor.
When did Charles Martinet take over Mario’s voice?
Even though Martinet has been using his distinctive Mario voice since 1991, the majority of fans were introduced to it with the release of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.
The first Super Mario game to incorporate 3D action in a wide open area, it was released in 1996 and follows Mario as he attempts to save Princess Peach from the evil Bowser.
Martinet’s now-iconic catchphrases, like “mama mia,” “let’s a-go,” and “it’s-a me,” made their debut in this game, the first big Nintendo property to include the character.
Since then, Martient has voiced not just Mario but also his brother Luigi, their enemies Wario and Waluigi, and many more from the Mushroom Kingdom in innumerable Mario titles. In the 2022 animated “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Chris Pratt portrayed Mario. However, Martinet had a cameo as Mario’s father.
As part of his new role as a “Mario ambassador,” Nintendo announced that Martinet would be signing autographs and providing voiceovers for various Nintendo characters. As he traveled the world to promote the popular Italian plumber. In his post, Martinet retweeted Nintendo and wrote, “My new adventure begins!” In my eyes, you are the greatest!”
